Cognitive Rehabilitation

Cognitive rehabilitation can help both patients and their families to live with, manage, reduce, or come to terms with the cognitive deficits caused by injuries or illness. Therapists can help develop a plan and follow that plan. Cognitive rehabilitation is designed to help brain-injured or otherwise cognitively impaired individuals to regain normal functioning, or at the very least, compensate for cognitive deficiencies. The goal is to enable patients or clients, as well as their family members, to live with, manage, reduce, by-pass, or come to terms with these cognitive deficits. In addition, cognitive rehabilitation can help reduce further disability and handicap, and also address any negative secondary responses to the situation, including loss of self-esteem and self-confidence, or depression.

Cognitive rehabilitation therapists follow a system of activities aimed at:

  • Re-establishing or reinforcing previously learned behavioral patterns
  • Creating new patterns of cognitive activity
  • Enabling a person to adapt to their cognitive disability to improve their overall functioning

While cognitive rehabilitation was initially designed for people with brain injuries, it can also be used for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia. Cognitive rehabilitation can be especially effective in the early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease or other types of Dementia. One of the defining features of these early stages is memory problems. Cognitive rehabilitation is specifically designed to address everyday memory difficulties. It focuses on guided practice on a set of tasks that closely reflect particular cognitive functions, such as memory, attention, and problem-solving. Cognitive rehabilitation focuses on identifying the needs and goals of the individual, which may require additional strategies for absorbing new information.
